Quick Tips for Reducing Your Car Accident Risk

Universal Auto Body & Glass • 30 March 2023

With an average of over 16,000 car accidents occurring in the U.S. each day, you’ll want to always be cautious on the roadway. But even if you’re a defensive driver, there still exists the risk of being involved in a collision due to another driver’s recklessness. If you do get in a wreck, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle is fully restored to its pre-accident condition so that you’re optimally protected if you get in another accident at some point down the road. At Universal Auto Body & Glass, our team of experienced technicians can expertly repair your collision damage and make your car safely drivable again.

Tips for Avoiding Car Wrecks

You can significantly reduce your accident risk by simply avoiding distraction and keeping your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel. Primarily because of smartphone use, distracted driving is the top cause of accidents in the nation. However, there are other distractions that should be avoided while driving, such as eating and applying makeup. Even if you stop paying attention to the road for just a moment, that’s enough time to put you at heightened risk of a serious collision.

You can also decrease your accident risk by making sure your view through your windshield isn’t obscured by cracks, chips, or scratches. It’s important to repair windshield damage quickly so that you're fully able to see the road ahead. You can also boost visibility by wiping down the inside and outside of your windshield on a weekly basis, which will get rid of dirt/debris that may obstruct your view of the road. Another way to improve visibility is by purchasing a good pair of polarized sunglasses, which will help you see the road more safely when the sun’s glare is intense.

Also, you should always maintain a safe following distance. In good driving conditions, your following distance should be at least three seconds. In rain, this should be increased to five seconds. If there’s snow/ice on the road, then your following distance should be ten seconds or more. You can measure your following distance by noting when the vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, such as an overpass, and then counting how many seconds it takes you to get to that point.
